Northwell Health seeks nominations and applications for an exceptional leader for the role of Inaugural Director of Mood Disorders Center, in the Department of Psychiatry at Zucker Hillside Hospital. In partnership with the Chair and Senior Vice President (John Q. Young, MD) and the Institute of Behavioral Science (led by Anil Malhotra, MD and John Kane, MD), the director will create and oversee the Mood Disorders Center, direct research, guide clinical strategy for depression care at New York’s largest health system, and teach and mentor trainees and faculty.
The Inaugural Director of Mood Disorders Center will develop new and expand existing programs of research in mood disorders, including recruiting additional research faculty. Research priorities for the department include genetics, neuroimaging, translational neuroscience, digital psychiatry, mental health services and implementation science and all areas of research in which mood disorders play a central role. The Director of Mood Disorders Center will have the opportunity to mentor, practice and teach in their respective area of psychiatry or psychology and participate in mood disorders educational programs across the system.
The Director will help guide the clinical strategy for mood disorders care at Northwell. Northwell’s Behavioral Health Service Line encompasses over 500 inpatient beds in seven hospitals, 74 substance abuse beds in two locations, and over 600,000 outpatient visits. The service line is implementing a strategy to dramatically improve access to behavioral health care. This plan includes integrated care in primary (adult and pediatric) care and medical settings, school-based mental health, outpatient psychiatry clinics distributed across the system, virtual tele-psychiatry and psychotherapy, and subspecialty centers at Zucker Hillside Hospital.
In partnership with the Department Chair, the Inaugural Director of Mood Disorders Center will create and oversee the system’s dedicated Mood Disorders Center, direct research, teach and mentor trainees and faculty, and guide clinical strategy for depression and anxiety care for the department. The new Director will develop new and expand existing programs of research in mood disorders, including recruiting additional research scientists. The Director will help Northwell develop effective educational programs that advance the care of patients with mood disorders. This clinician-scientist will integrate new and existing programs to provide care and consultation for treatment-resistant cases.

Zucker Hillside Hospital
Zucker Hillside Hospital (ZHH) is the academic hub for psychiatry at Northwell. ZHH is a 236-bed Northwell behavioral health facility, known for its influential clinical, teaching, and research programs. Over the past 30 years, it has been the site of multiple National Institute of Mental Health research centers focused on the treatment of schizophrenia, including a Clinical Research Center, an Intervention Research Center, and a Center for Intervention Development and Applied Research. These federally supported centers have provided Zucker Hillside with national and international recognition for its pioneering work in diagnosing and treating serious mental illness. The hope is to further replicate these efforts in mood disorders.
Inpatient services include adolescent, adult, geriatric, and women’s units. Treatment specialties include early-phase psychosis treatment, affective disorders, schizophrenia, peripartum mood and anxiety disorders, bipolar and personality disorders, medical/neurological illnesses with psychiatric symptoms, and Alzheimer's disease or related conditions. Zucker Hillside’s 22-bed inpatient women’s unit is the first in New York state and one of only a few in the U.S. to specialize in treating women with perinatal psychiatric illness.
Outpatient programs serve all ages and encompass the full continuum of care. These services include the second largest ECT program in the US, partial hospital treatment programs, and a full range of psychiatric rehabilitation services. Programs for alcohol and chemical dependency are available both on our main campus and in numerous community-based sites. Additional specialized outpatient programs at Zucker Hillside include a Clinical High Risk (CHR) clinic, Clozapine clinic, OCD clinic, bipolar disorder clinic, perinatal depression clinic, treatment resistant depression and interventional psychiatry program, a crisis center, a clinic for first episode psychosis, and a college behavioral health program.

To be successful, candidates should have a strong track record of excellence in research, teaching, and clinical care; demonstrated success in obtaining extramural funding; a track record of impactful publications in the field; a commitment to collaborative research; and the skills and experience to play a leadership role in the translation of research findings into clinical practice. The Inaugural Director of Mood Disorders Center will have the opportunity to mentor, practice and teach in their respective area of psychiatry or psychology at the Zucker Hillside Hospital as well as collaborate with mood disorders educational programs across the system. The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be determined based on various factors, including but not limited to scope of role, level of experience, education, specialty/subspeciality, credentials, academic accomplishments, clinical productivity, quality metrics, patient experience, site/location internal equity, budget, and subject to Fair Market Value evaluation. The base compensation range listed is a good faith determination of potential base compensation at the time of this job advertisement and may be modified in the future.
