Description

Emugen Therapeutics LLC, a discovery research company developing gene therapies for debilitating diseases, is seeking an exceptional behavioral neuroscientist to join the Translational Research team located at our Woburn, MA site. This individual will be part of a dynamic multi-disciplinary team leveraging our founders’ world-renowned expertise in brain science, genetic engineering, animal models, gene therapy, and brain disorders to advance a novel pipeline of gene therapies for clinical applications. The successful candidate for the Research Scientist I, Translational Research role will work closely with Director of Translational Research and a growing, cross-functional team of research scientists to ensure rigorous scientific quality, and both carry out hands-on experiments and manage day-to-day laboratory tasks. 

The ideal candidate will have considerable experience and expertise handling and working with rodents, including performing stereotaxic surgeries, behavioural assays, and electrophysiological experiments in vivo, all while prizing accuracy being prepared to contribute individually as well as to provide support for other members of the team. Characteristic Duties 

  • The goal of the candidate must be to drive the advancement of Emugen’s early-stage pipeline with passion, rigour and dedication to the production of quality data 
  • Assist with scheduling and the coordination of in vivo studies across neuroscience portfolio 
  • Assist with the design, plan, and execution of in vivo studies in various animal models of neurodevelopmental disorders and psychiatric disorders to assess efficacy of novel therapeutic candidates in multiple genetically driven diseases 
  • Organize and maintain mouse colonies, genotyping, breeding, and standard husbandry practices
  • Perform in vivo lab experiments including but not limited to dosing (IV, ICV, IP, Nasal delivery, ICM, etc.), PK/PD studies, and stereotaxic surgeries
  • Perform ex vivo experiments, including sample collection from multiple tissues
  • Implement and validate new animal disease models that can be added to Emugen’s existing in vivo platform
  • Extract protein and RNA from primary tissue sources for in vitro assays including PCR, qPCR
  • Support the Translational Research team in efforts to build a repertoire of rodent behaviour, neurobehavior, and neurophysiological assays 
  • Educate oneself and stay current regarding novel findings and techniques in relevant scientific literature
  • Maintain an electronic laboratory notebook that provides clear documentation of experimental methods and results, and present data to the Translational Research team
  • Must recognize and adhere to IACUC standards of in vivo research, assist with bookkeeping of protocols, animal usage, document all experiments in electronic notebook, and track registries
  • Collaborate with the discovery research team and CROs to carry out and validate scientific results. 
  • Work with Lab manager to procure and maintain equipment and supplies

Requirements

  • PhD degree in a related field, preferably with coursework in neuroscience or biology 
  • 1-5 years of relevant hands-on experience in a wet lab environment or neuroscience laboratory (Industry experience will be considered a plus)
  • Basic understanding of neuroscience and drug applications to neurological and developmental disorders, particularly genetic disorders
  • Experience to work with basic rodent handling, breeding and genotyping of genetically modified mouse lines
  • Experience in the most common neurobehavioral procedures used in small rodents
  • Perform survival and non-survival procedures 
  • Must work collaboratively and be agile in a dynamic and ever-changing environment
  • Strong organizational skillset and time-management skills
  • Job requires candidate to be on-site during normal working hours (9am-5pm Monday-Friday) and on-call for laboratory emergencies during non-working hours
  • The ideal candidate will be computer savvy, including expertise in machine learning, competence in advanced data analysis methods and ability to manage electronic registries
